Christmas 2012

Either a Christmas hug or a Christmas chokehold.
It's either a loving moment between brothers or a pretty decent choke hold by Holden.  Let's go with the first one.
A cute picture despite neither kid looking at the camera
It's too early to look at the camera when you ask us to Dad.

Something from the WWE was among the items in Holden's stocking. This sets up a theme of gifts.

Christmas Dancing

I can't tell you how many nights Leah and I spend sitting at home working on our hip hop dance moves.  It's good that Christmas has arrived so that we can show them off.
Although sometimes we do stop the crunchy holiday beats and go old school with a little Charleston.  It's how we do.

Thank you Santa Claus

After the unspeakable tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut last Friday, it seemed like a perfect night to be together as a family and make a good memory for the kids. Santa helped us achieve this goal. We had a nice night out with the boys and visited with, in my opinion, the best Santa Claus around at Jordan Creek Town Center.  The boys were excited to see Santa (well, Holden was at least - Maddux didn't seem to care one way or the other), we were able to get a nice picture to commemorate it and Leah and I were able to do something other than sit around watching the news asking ourselves "why".
Thank you Santa.

Santa's video message for Holden 2012

Santa Claus left a video message for Holden again this year.  This has become a tradition that Dad and Mom look forward to as much or more than Holden.  It will be interesting to see how (if?) Santa can leave different messages next year when Maddux is old enough to be aware of getting one.

6th Grade Music Concert

A few images from the 6th grade concert last night.  The chorus, band and orchestra all performed (Gillian is a member of the chorus and played the flute in the band) and all did a fantastic job.  I was very disappointed in my fellow parents and audience members however as the vast majority got up and left as soon as their child's portion was over.  The entire concert lasted less than 90 minutes and yet that was too much time to dedicate to supporting the music program and showing appreciation for the hard work all the other kids put in?  People never cease to amaze me.  Absolutely unacceptable.

I'm very proud of Gillian for carrying on the family tradition of playing music.  I hope she gets as much enjoyment from it as I have throughout the years.

Holden's first school conference

Holden's first official school conference has now come and gone (I don't count the conferences for preschool because those are...well....stupid).
Everything is going well, blah blah blah.  It's a kindergarten conference.  Are we really going to be discussing much?

Anyway, when Leah and I got home I showed Holden the drawing below and told him that his teacher sent it home as the one naughty thing he's done this school year.  I then promptly forgot about it until two days later when he brought it up again and presented me with his proof that it isn't something that really happened.

The proof?

"We can't wear hats in school Dad!"

Setting a mean kid on fire?  Doesn't seem to phase him.
Pissing on said mean kid who is on fire?  Doesn't seem to phase him.
Depictions of him wearing a ball cap while setting a kid on fire and peeing on him?  Throw the flag.

Good to know.

The election

Reposting from what I wrote on Facebook a short time ago.  Why?  Because it's 100% accurate.

Reading my Facebook feed I realize that more people than not treat the election like they're choosing a team in a big game. There is little to no thought put in to people's positions. You're just spitting out talking points, regurgitating incorrect information and forgetting that we are all one country. You've picked "your guy" and are more interested in talking down to those you oppose than talking up and supporting why you came to your decision. Well done Facebook land. Keep posting "boo yah!", "Obama won motherfuckers" and other eloquent missives. I'll keep actually paying attention.

Maddux is now *officially* one

We all know you can't be officially one until you've had your first birthday cake.  Well, it's now official.

Happy Birthday Maddux!

The year was 2011.  Halloween.  Leah, Holden and I met up with Amy and Gillian to go trick-or-treating.  Leah did a remarkable job of speed waddling to keep up with the kids as they went house to house getting candy.  As we made our way around town, we discussed what we needed to do to get ready for our scheduled visit to the hospital on November 3rd to induce labor and bring our baby boy in to the world.  Neither of us planned on Maddux deciding that Halloween sounded so much fun that he wanted to get in on the festivities but that's just what happened.  We got home, got Holden in to bed and tried to call it a night.  A couple of hours passed and it became apparent that Leah wasn't just uncomfortable because she was 9 months pregnant - she was in labor.

A quick trip over to Mary Greeley, some denial by Leah (seriously - once they administer an epidural it is a good bet they aren't going to send you home declaring that it's false labor), a lot of coffee for the tired husband, and after some pushing, Maddux Clark Davis arrived.  He started out with a red, smashed up face and eyes that looked disturbingly like labia (Leah still hates it when I describe his eyes that way) but was still pretty darn cute.

I know all parents say "I can't believe it's been a year!" when their baby turns 1 but this truly has been an amazingly fast year for us.  Time seems to have passed far quicker than with any of the other kids for some reason.  Maddux started walking a little bit before he turned 10 months and now climbs, does a sweet little walk backwards moonwalk looking thing, decided he wanted nothing to do with baby food around 2 months ago and drinks constantly like his big brother Holden and his father. Overall he's the happiest baby of all the kids and is perfectly content with either Mommy or Daddy when he is tired, hungry, etc. instead of gravitating towards one parent as so many children (including ours in the past) do.  In fact, when he gets hurt, he's not content until he's told both parents about it and gotten a hug.  Once he's come to both of us, he's back to being his normal happy little guy self.

Happy birthday Maddux.  We love you.

Day 2 of life.

A little squished looking but still pretty cute.
Welcomed by the Cubs. Now he's official.
Being cute in early October.

Just after his first haircut this past weekend.

Halloween 2012

Trick or treating is tonight at 5:30.  It's coming down to the wire and I still haven't decided which of these two costumes I'm going to wear.

As the World Series ends we enter a long winter and count the days until pitchers and catchers report to spring training in Florida and Arizona. Although the Cubs season was terrible and over by early April, it was still an amazing season. Yes I live and breathe Cubs but I am a fan of the game through and through. It took Leah some time to figure out that I am perfectly happy watching a good game between two teams I really don't care about just because of my love for the game.

Farewell baseball and thanks for another season of excitement.

As always, the words of Bart Giamatti are perfect:
“It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall all alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops.”

I Was Gonna Marry You

Tristan Prettyman has long been one of my favorite artists.  While it's terrible that her personal life took an unexpected turn in the loss of a relationship (her broken engagement with Jason Mraz), it did make for an absolutely excellent album and what is probably my favorite song that has been released by anyone in a number of years.  If you can listen to this (and watch the end of her performance here where you can see a tear drop from her eye) and not be moved you may want to have your physician check to make sure you still have a heart.

A couple of pictures you don't see often

My sister is back from Japan for just under two weeks.  We were very excited to go to the Center Grove Orchard with her last weekend.  A couple of my favorite photos from the visit just happened to be taken on our way out.
The first known photo of my mom, sister and I taken in....ummm....a long time.

Totally kicking Sarah's ass in reproduction.  She's going to have to have a litter someday if she hopes to catch up.

Happy 6th birthday Holden Ryne!

On September 27, 2006 at 7:17 p.m., a 20.5 inch baby boy weighing 8 lbs 7 oz. made his way in to the world and immediately made our lives infinitely better.  Happy birthday little man.

Thanks Boone News Republican!

Remember that post from yesterday about Jesse's selection to umpire the Little League World Series?  I do, even though you can't see it here anymore.
Still couldn't be happier for Jesse.  Still couldn't be prouder of Jesse.  Still don't have a single good thing to say about the Boone News Republican.

Outstanding. You people really know how to attract readers. A terrible website that requires registration and demanding removal of an article, fully attributed to your newspaper and writer with link, from a personal blog. Well done Boone News Republican.

Feeding Maddux Playlist

One of the many reasons Maddux is going to be awesome: the playlist of music he and I listen to when I feed him. How can you *not* turn out awesome with this during your formative years.

Shelter - The XX
Bloodstream - Stateless
Beautiful - G Love
Poison & Wine - The Civil Wars
Shushyaz - Kalai
I Was Gonna Marry You - Tristan Prettyman
Waiting For A Superman - The Flaming Lips
Angels - The XX

Father's Day

I had a fantastic and relaxing Father's Day.  Maddux had his pictures taken at the Photography 139 Studio, we spent some time at the pool, grilled steaks, Holden and I made banana bread (because Father's Day is the perfect time to bake with my son and teach him about woman's work) and watched the Cubs play the Red Sox.  With the exception of the Cubs being an absolutely terrible baseball team it was a great day.

I woke up to a some cards (Batman one from Holden only because he was adamant that it was only from him and wouldn't let anyone else near it).

The kids and Leah made this little bit of awesomeness.  All of our hands outlined and cut out of fabric then framed.
It threw Leah off a little that the sizes were supposed to decrease from me, to her to the kids when she discovered Gillian's fingers (green) are alomst as long as hers are (black).
We weren't able to get together with my Mom and Dad but honestly I won't object since that gives us a good excuse to fire up the grill and celebrate all over again sometime soon.

Thanks family for a fantastic day.  I'm a pretty lucky Dad.

All it needs is bars on the top

You know how when sometimes you get nervous if kids are around and it's too quiet?  You can also get that same feeling if you start hearing muffled laughs from a five year old and loud laughs from a 7 month old.  I still don't know exactly what they were doing before I walked it but I discovered that Holden had decided to join Maddux in his playpen and that they were having a great time.  Doing something.  Perhaps it's best not to know.

"You are about to embark upon a great crusade... The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you...You will bring about...the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe... Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened, he will fight savagely... And let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking." - Dwight Eisenhower

Hanging with Darth Vader and his daughter

Holden seems pretty happy to be hanging out with someone that has gone to the dark side of the force.
Just a couple of Sith

Fortunately he's also happy hanging out with Princess Leia.
I always thought she'd be taller
Daddy, Maddux and Mommy

All in all, Star Wars night at the Ericson Public Library was a hit (other than being about 120 degrees in there).

Thanks for everything Kerry Wood

May 6, 1998 remains, in my opinion, the most dominant pitching performance in baseball.  Yes, even more so than a no hitter or perfect game.  The W-L record isn't one for the ages but Kerry Wood will always be among my all time favorites for the way he played the game.  Thanks for the memories Woody!

50 Shades of Grey

Are you a middle aged housewife who is too busy to read but doesn't want to be left out of the giggle-fest at your next gathering of aging chicks proclaiming "we're still young, we drink margaritas at mexican restaurants!"? Good news. Now you can listen to the crap your friends are all reading!

Mother's Day 2012

We spent a very relaxing and fun day on a pontoon boat at the Big Creek State Park for Mother's Day this year.  Hard to beat hanging out with friends, grilling and enjoying some time outside on a beautiful day.  I think this was a day we're going to have to repeat in the very near future.
